Hillary Clinton says President Donald Trump would have tried to “lock her up” if there was legitimately any law she had broken in a recent and rather odd statement given the venue.

“Look, if I had ever done anything wrong, he would have gone after me,” Clinton told The Hollywood Reporter‘s Awards Chatter podcast while promoting her new Hulu documentary. “You know, I’ve never done anything wrong. I’m, you know, as some people like to say, the most investigated, and exonerated person in recent history.”

Interesting statement as we’ve never in her entire political history seen a situation where she ever needed an “exoneration” of any kind. To date, she has still not been taken to task other than general questioning on anything. Blackwater, Benghazi, Obamagate, Pizzagate, or the myriad of other heinous things her and her family have been tied to, none of it.

She also seems to forget that thanks to a number of great people including but certainly not limited to Julian Assange, we all now know better.

Clinton went on to say that, deep down, Trump fears his 2016 win is illegitimate because Russia helped him and he would have gone after her if he thought it would impose a personal cost on her.

“He would have, because he’s a vindictive score-settler and he doesn’t want the legitimacy of his election ever to be questioned, although history will continue to question it,” she continued. “So, thankfully, you know, I never did anything that gave him any cause, despite his best efforts.”

Regarding the push from advertisers to get Facebook to address hate speech on its network including a boycott, which has cost Mark Zuckerberg billions in wealth, Clinton said she’s impressed by the effort because the country is divided by sources of information.

“If you create algorithms for Facebook, controversy drives more clicks. Conspiracies are just manna from Heaven, they will get people’s attention,” she said. “Facebook has to be held accountable because they trafficked in conspiracy, they trafficked in misinformation, they trafficked in Russian disinformation, and they’ve got to be held accountable because we’re gonna have another election, and everybody should know what’s at stake and then cast their vote accordingly.”

Clinton also said she would be doing a better job with the coronavirus pandemic than Trump.

“We sure could have done a better job saving lives, modeling better, more responsible behavior,” she said. “I don’t think we necessarily should have had as deep an economic assault on livelihoods and jobs as we have. So I know I would have done a better job.”

Clinton was also asked about socializing with Trump years before they faced off in 2016, including being a guest to his 2005 Florida wedding.

She said Trump used to support New York Democrats like herself, so it wasn’t crazy at the time, before turning to his political about face since then.

“I don’t know what happened to the person who supported Democrats and then became a ‘birther,’ questioning, you know, President Obama’s birth certificate, and then became a virulently anti-immigrant candidate, when he had used immigrant labor for everything he built,” she said.

Clinton demurred when asked if Trump himself should be locked up and said she doesn’t know if Trump will go quietly in leaving the White House if he loses in November, but did not hold back when asked if she would defeat him if she was the Democratic standard-bearer now.

“Yes,” she answered. “But I think people believe that this is a referendum on him.”
